A day trip on the East Coast
08/04/1999 - Excursions to the east coast of Spitsbergen island by snowscooter. Today the weather is superb and there are lots of wonderful places to see, with many glaciers flowing into the frozen arctic ocean. Return back to Svea to overnight.

| The first words of our guide this morning was "Good morning ! We will see a lot spectacular things today !", and I've replied "Wow, I cannot wait anymore !". | ||
|
We leave Svea for the East Coast driving south-east over the Rindersbukta bay where we see very fresh Polar Bear's footprints and probably a trace of some terrible battle or attempt of trapping a seal. |

At the end of the Rinderbukta bay we can admire the blue front of the Scheelebreen glacier. We then climb over Paulabreen glacier to continue the trip. |

The ice is so thick that only the peaks of the highest monutains actually come out from the virgin snow ! |

| On the pack ice again, close to the Strongbreen glacier's front. Here the color of the ice is very intense, between green and blue. It is hard to belive that on late summer it is possible to come here by boat. |

In some place the ice has an intense color, especially where it is more old and compact. |
 |

We continue to drive on the pack ice and we encounter some huge iceberg frozen solid into the sea's ice (top-left picture). |

After a while we arrive at the "end of the world" where the pack ice becomes cracked and very uneven (top-left). We then climb over an hill to see the arctic ocean from above (bottom-right). |

After a day like this, we will be very sorry to head back to Svea in order to spend the night. |

Snowscooter excursion to Barentsburg Snowscooter trip to Barentsburg from Longyearbyen. Barentsburg is a little russian mining town, living on coal mines. The snowscooter trip takes about two hours each way. GO. |

The expedition to the most hidden parts of Svalbard starts today, driving the snowmobile from Longyearbyen to an area designed as campsite. Here, the group overnights into a small igloo, under a sky made of millions of stars and northern lights. GO. |

Spitsbergen East coast by snowmobile Snowmachine excursion to the east coast of Spitsbergen island, driving over glaciers and pack ice trapping huge icebergs. GO. |

Snowmobile from east Coast to Svea and Longyearbyen By snowscooter back to Longyearbyen, with lunch stop in Svea. Today the weather is really beautiful and the cold, together with a sun very low on the horizon, even at mid day, produce incredible sky colors going from pink, to orange, to violet, to deep blue. GO. |
