Sleeping inside an igloo on Svalbard (Spitsbergen) in winter

Igloo campsite
15-17/02/2001 - The expedition to the most hidden parts of Svalbard starts today, driving the snowmobile from Longyearbyen to an area designed as campsite. Here, the group overnights into a small igloo, under a sky made of millions of stars and northern lights.

The igloo built on our campsite, Svalbard

The igloo camp is located about 30 km from Longyearbyen and I've reached it, together with my group, by snowmobile.

I've spent two consecutive nights inside this house made of ice, without feeling any cold (even if on the second morning the temperature was -25°C outside and -10,5°C inside).

The igloo camp was a very good "strategic point" in order to reach the most remote and beautiful locations, durning the day.


The heated tent were we had our meals and the snowmobiles under a light snow shower. The small tent used as bathroom is faintly visible on the right picture, behind the first snowmobile.

The second night the sky was so clear that it was possible to see, thanks also to the big distance from the nearest town and its light, millions of stars (I'm not joking !), some falling star and dancing northen light. Even if the temperature was -19°C, it was impossible to resist to the temptation to stretch out over the snow to observe this incredible spectacle and take a lot of pictures.

	Spitsbergen East coast by snowmobile Snowmachine excursion to the east coast of Spitsbergen island, driving over glaciers and pack ice trapping huge icebergs. GO.
	Snowmobile from east Coast to Svea and Longyearbyen By snowscooter back to Longyearbyen, with lunch stop in Svea. Today the weather is really beautiful and the cold, together with a sun very low on the horizon, even at mid day, produce incredible sky colors going from pink, to orange, to violet, to deep blue. GO.
*SVALBARD PICTURES - APRIL 1999 TRIP: SPITSBERGEN BY SNOW SCOOTER*
	Longyearbyen and ice caves excursion Hikes in Longyearbyen, before descending into a cave under a glacier, for an ice cave excursion. Visit to a coal mine (where it wasn't permitted to take pictures). GO.
	From Longyearbyen to Barentsburg by snowmobile A four days expeditions thru Svalbard by snowscooter starts today, driving from Longyearbyen to Barentsburg for the first lunch stop. GO.
	From Barentsburg to Svea, Spitsbergen island After a short break in Barentsburg, the expedition to Svalbard by snowmobile continues driving over glaciers and frozen fjords all the way to Svea for the first overnight. GO.
	Spitsbergen east coast by snowscooter Excursions to the east coast of Spitsbergen island by snowscooter. Today the weather is superb and there are lots of wonderful places to see, with many glaciers flowing into the frozen arctic ocean. Return back to Svea to overnight. GO.
	Von Post glacier excursion The expedition to Svalbard by snowmobile ends today, driving from Svea back to Longyearbyen via the beautiful Von Post glacier. GO.
