Travel Oslo Bergen by train and cruising the Sognefjord

Although Oslo and Bergen are connected by frequent flights lasting just one hour, it worth to afford this 14 hours trip by train over one of the world's most scenic railways, followed by a relaxing cruise into Sognefjord, one of the Norway's deepest fjord.

This NSB train, the norwegian state owned railways, is approaching Oslo S station, bound for Bergen.

The first part of the trip is around lakes, mountains and dense forests.

Then, the train climbs slowly above 1000 meters over sea level, stopping in several small towns and crossing spectacular landscapes made of lakes, glaciers, mountains, where many refuges and cabins are located.

Then, the trip continues over this beautiful scenery.

Train to Flam

In Myrdal, just before noon, we leave the train in order to take the connecting train to Flam. The Flamsbana railway is a jewel of engineering, as, in just 20 kilometers, it covers 880 meters of elevation, using just a standard gauge rail.

The train stops near a waterfall to let passengers to climb and descend.

We are now back to lower altitudes.

Shortly after 1pm, the train reaches Flam where, two hours later, we leave for a cruise into Sognefjord, bound for Bergen.

Sognefjord is one of the Norway's longest and deepest fjord. The ship calls at several towns along the way.

Waterfall are numerous along the mountains sides.

 

Once out from the fjord, now quite close to bergen, the landscape changes into many small islands with dense vegetation and small huts.

At 8:40pm, after a trip 14 hours long, we finally arrive in Bergen.

Oslo is probably the least "norwegian" city of the entire Norway, as it is big and quite chaotic. Anyway, it worth a visit, because of the nice parks and the interesting museums. GO

Bergen is actually considered the Norway's most picturesque and beautiful city, known for the ancient houses of the Bryggen district, now included into UNESCO heritage places, for the fish market and for the vibrant colors of the charming streets. GO

Aalesund is a modern and picturesque city. Almost completely destroyed by a fire in the past century, Aalesund was rebuilt in european style by norwegian architects. The city has one of the most important fishing industry of the entire country. GO

The trip from Bodo to Trondheim by NSB, the norwegian's state owned railways, lasts almost 10 hours. The train runs between spectacular scenery and, south of Bodo, crosses the arctic circle. GO

The most ancient part of the city is full of history and is very picturesque for the nice wooden houses and for the gothic cathedral, a symbol of the city. Trondheim is an important industrial centre, known for wood and fish processing. GO
