On arrival at Kahului Intl. airport, I rent a car and start to ascent the 10000 feet (3000 meters) Haleakala dormient volcano. In the picture: the top of the volcano's cone is visible above the clouds.

The landscape from this altitude is outstanding and I can see the entire island of Maui, as well as Hawaii, Lanai and Molokai (I cannot see just Ohau because of the clouds).

Rare Silver Sword, Hawaii Rare Silver Sword, Hawaii
The Silver Sword, an endangered and protected plant living only on the island of Maui and Hawaii, and only at very high altitudes.

The landscape inside the crater. Because of the altitude, it is very difficult to walk, especially on steep climbs.

I then take a guided tour inside a plantation, to discover some typical tropical vegetation. On the pictures, from top-left clockwise: a Cycas revoluta; other plants used as ornaments; a coffee plant with fruits and finally, plants of Papaya.

Another nice tree in the same plantation.

The road from Kahului to Hana is spectacular and very scenic. There are dozens of waterfalls like these, usually ending in a small lagoon where it is possible to swim.

Maui, Hawaii, on the road to Hana
A walk in the jungle. Sometimes the vegetation is so dense, that it covers totally any mountain's side. Like on Kauai, the chickens are very frequent here.

Maui, Hawaii, on the road to Hana
Near Hana, I walk on a 90 minutes trail ending to a spectacular waterfall. In the pictures: mangroves and a bamboo forest.

On the trail, it is sometimes necessary to cross some shallow stream and some suspended bridge.
